BYD ATTO 3 (e-Platform 3.0) Compressor Not Working
An inoperative air-conditioning compressor indicates that the electric compressor is not starting or is not being commanded to operate when cooling is requested. The fault affects the electric A/C and thermal-management system, which uses the compressor to circulate refrigerant and remove heat from the cabin. The BYD ATTO 3 uses BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture, with this generation introduced from 2022 and continuing onward.
Symptoms
- Air conditioner does not produce cold air
- Compressor does not operate when cooling is requested
- Cabin temperature remains high
- A/C cooling may be intermittent
- Climate control warning may be displayed
- Compressor may stop shortly after activation
- Refrigerant circulation may be absent
- Related HVAC or electrical fault codes may be stored
Possible Causes
- Electric A/C compressor internal failure
- Compressor high-voltage power supply fault
- Compressor control or communication fault
- Low or unstable high-voltage system voltage
- Low 12V auxiliary system voltage
- Refrigerant pressure outside the permitted range
- Refrigerant leak or insufficient refrigerant charge
- Faulty refrigerant pressure sensor
- Damaged compressor wiring or connector
- Thermal-management system fault
- HVAC control-module fault
- High-voltage interlock or safety-system fault
- Compressor protection shutdown
Diagnosis
Diagnosis should begin by confirming the cooling request and checking whether the compressor receives an operating command. Compressor status, high-voltage and 12V supplies, refrigerant pressure data, communication status, wiring, connectors, and relevant HVAC control-module information should then be evaluated against manufacturer specifications.
The diagnostic direction should establish whether the compressor is being prevented from operating by a pressure, electrical, communication, thermal-management, or control-system condition before the compressor itself is considered faulty.
Because the A/C compressor uses high-voltage electrical equipment, manufacturer safety procedures and appropriate EV isolation practices are essential during diagnosis.
Many independent workshops throughout New Zealand rely on OEM diagnostic information to verify high-voltage HVAC faults before replacing components.
Accurately diagnosing this fault often requires manufacturer testing procedures, wiring diagrams, connector pinouts, specifications, and system calibration information. Access to the factory service manual significantly reduces diagnostic time and helps prevent unnecessary parts replacement.
