BYD ATTO 3 (e-Platform 3.0) Instrument Cluster CAN Off Body Network
An instrument cluster CAN-off condition indicates that the instrument cluster has lost communication with the vehicle’s body network. The fault affects the Controller Area Network (CAN) communication system used to exchange information between the cluster, body control modules, and other electronic control units for displaying vehicle status and warnings. The BYD ATTO 3 uses BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture, with this generation introduced from 2022 and continuing onward.
Symptoms
- Instrument cluster communication warning
- Missing or incorrect vehicle information on the cluster
- Warning indicators may not operate correctly
- Body-system information may be unavailable
- Cluster functions may operate intermittently
- Multiple CAN communication fault codes may be stored
- Other body-control functions may report communication faults
- Instrument cluster may restart or temporarily lose information
Possible Causes
- CAN communication wiring open circuit
- Short circuit on the CAN network
- Loose or damaged instrument cluster connector
- Poor connector terminal contact
- Corroded or damaged wiring
- Instrument cluster power supply fault
- Instrument cluster ground fault
- Body network control-module fault
- CAN bus termination or network integrity problem
- Low or unstable 12V auxiliary voltage
- Internal instrument cluster communication fault
- Another control module disrupting the CAN network
Diagnosis
Diagnosis should begin by confirming the CAN-off condition and performing a complete vehicle network scan to identify other modules that may have lost communication. Instrument cluster power and ground supplies, CAN-H and CAN-L circuits, connector condition, network status, and communication with other body control modules should then be evaluated against manufacturer specifications.
The diagnostic direction should establish whether the fault originates at the cluster, its wiring, power supply, or another module affecting the body CAN network before replacing the instrument cluster.
Workshop technicians across New Zealand frequently use factory repair procedures when diagnosing intermittent vehicle network communication faults.
Accurately diagnosing this fault often requires manufacturer testing procedures, wiring diagrams, connector pinouts, specifications, and system calibration information. Access to the factory service manual significantly reduces diagnostic time and helps prevent unnecessary parts replacement.
